So many of us know how the old song goes: “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend”. Indeed, as one of the most timeless and stunning stones within the jewellery world, there’s no denying the allure of diamond rings, earrings, and other such pieces for both men and women. What you hear less about, however, is how to maintain that beautiful sparkle and shine that makes diamond pieces so captivating.
At Paris Jewellers, we’re proud to offer a wide variety of engagement, wedding, and fine jewellery, including stunning diamond rings and our brand new tennis bracelets. We believe in making sure you have everything you need to make an easy purchase, including the knowledge to help you keep your diamonds dazzling for years to come! Below, we’ll explore some of the best ways to get the most out of your diamond jewellery and to avoid unfortunate mishaps that can cause wear and tear. Read on to learn more!
Almost Indestructible
One of the most common misconceptions that lead to damaged rings is the idea that diamonds are indestructible. While diamonds are exceptionally tough, especially compared to other gemstones, this doesn’t mean that you don’t need to exercise caution and care while handling them. A little caution and a little treatment will go a long way towards keeping your diamonds in top shape.
Prevention is Key
As when caring for any delicate item, prevention is your best friend. Be aware of your ring, as well as situations that may put it at risk for damage. While you may be less than eager to take it off (we don’t blame you!), knowing when to remove your ring can save you a lot of hassle.
For example, high-impact sports, gardening, cleaning, showering, and even washing the dishes (be careful around drains!) can pose a risk for scratching, loss, or other sorts of damage. Even though you may want to keep your ring on as much as possible, taking it off and securing it in a safe place (pockets and purses are less ideal) is one of the best ways to avoid premature wear and tear.
Cleaning
Cleaning is another way to help maintain the natural lustre and shine of your diamonds. Avoid using harsh chemicals that can actually cause more harm than good, but spend a moment or two daily polishing your diamond with a soft cloth to remove natural oil build-up from your skin, as well as to get rid of any lotion or soap that may have had a chance to collect on the surface. Never scrub too hard, but aim to lightly remove any cloudiness as needed.
Every once in a while, you’ll likely notice that there’s more build-up than usual, and that’s to be expected from day-to-day wear. To restore its usual shine, you can use jewellery cleaner on your ring, gently polish it with baking soda, or even put it into a short vodka soak. Paris Jewellers offers both a jewellery cleaner and sparkle stick for cleaning on the go, making it easy to get that dazzle back safely and quickly.
If you’re still not having much luck getting that classic shine back, you’ll like want to take your ring into a jeweller to have a professional polish done, at which point they can also take a close look at more minute detail like wear to the prongs, etc.
Long Term Upkeep
Over time, you may notice that your ring has become looser or tighter, that the stone has become a little less secure in its prongs, or even that the band is showing some damage. At this point, it’s best to seek out the help of a professional to get things evaluated. Paris Jewellers offers both 3 year and lifetime jewellery care plans on our pieces to give you peace of mind when it comes to caring for your rings and to ensure you’ll always have the help you need!
